For this Reason

Just before you think I’m going to say “a man shall leave his father and mother”, and all of that marriage stuff. Why don’t you take a seat and let’s be a bit open-minded today.

Although I would love to go down the marriage lane with this piece, especially judging by the caption, I thought we would explore “for this reason” within other contexts of our lives.

Reason speaks about a “why”, “purpose”, “motivation”, and/or “drive”. Nothing in its essence exists for nothing. And unless reason is known and understood, potential is wasted, abused, or at best underutilized.

Like in the context of two people coming together in marriage, although I said I wasn’t going to do this way, but you can clearly see that I am tempted to. God reserved in himself the reason two people from different ethnic, cultural, educational, and socio-economic background would come together in a lifetime marital union.

“Reserved in himself” doesn’t mean it is a secret. It only means that you ought to inquire of him. Don’t pick your reasons on the streets.

Notice I left out religious or faith background up there, and it was deliberate. If you are a believer, you know why it is important that that is taken care of already.

The reason for creation in Genesis 1:1 was to take care of an issue of formlessness and void that existed. Not necessarily because that in itself bordered God. But simply because he is a God of form and order. Selah.

Revelations 4:11b says “…for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure, they are and were created.”(KJV) You can see that God had a reason. As trivial as it may seem to you.

In creating the first humans in our dispensation, God said “let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26).

God’s reason was to give man dominion over the beautiful earth he created, and have him replenish it. (See Genesis 1:28).

I can go on and on about the reasons God did stuff in the bible, but it is expedient that we narrow it down to you and the reasons for the choices you have made in your life until now.

What has been your motivation? What are the things that have informed your convictions? Why do you do the things you do?

Permit me to get real with you for a minute. Why did you get married, or why do you want to? Why is she the one? Or, why is he the one? If your reasons do not transcend sensuality, you need to revert to God for a more cogent “why”.

What about the reason you want to be rich and successful? Is it so that you can make the list of the powerful, influential, and celebrated ones in the society? You see, power, wealth, and influence are great, but in themselves are only a means to an end. Not the end. But how do you know they are not an end if you don’t know why you have or should have them?

Now, marriage and success are not the only areas where you need to get your “why” sorted out concerning. They just seem to be the most obvious ones.

How many people do you know have acquired qualifications or are pursuing some they have no business pursuing? How many more do you know hanging around people they have no business being yoked up with?

Everybody wants some form of security or assurance, hence the disregard for a “genuine why.” I can tell you don’t have your reasons figured out especially under God by how pressured you are.

It is sad that most people would live up their number of days on the earth, having enjoyed numerous privileges, but never arrived at why those privileges were granted them. Now there lies the greatest tragedy of life.

And you know, if you never live for the reasons you were created to live, you only added to the number. You never really lived.

If you ever wondered why God would say to some on the last day “depart from me you workers of iniquity”, although they came boasting about all the great works they did in his name, it is simply this; they somehow found reasons for the things they did, only that their reasons served only them. It was all self-centered. (See Matthew 7:21–23)

For “there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

Think on these things.

Shalom!
